Sound Testing

What is sound testing?

Sound insulation testing, often called pre-completion or acoustic testing, checks whether newly built or converted homes with separating walls or floors achieve the minimum standards for sound insulation set out in Part E of the Building Regulations.


This process is critical for developments such as flats, apartments, or houses that have been split into separate living spaces. The main goal is to ensure that airborne and impact noise, like voices, televisions, or footsteps, does not pass too easily from one dwelling to another.

Our sound testing process

You prepare the building for testing by making sure floors, doors, and walls are ready and accessible.

Airborne sound test
We place a loudspeaker in one room to generate sound and measure how much is heard in the adjoining space.

Impact sound test
An impact sound test is performed by placing a tapping machine on the upper floor room and then measuring the sound pressure level in the room below.

05

Results analysis
Our team standardises the measured levels and compares them against the legal limits set by Part E.
