Whole Life Carbon
Assessments

Whole Life Carbon Assessments

Our experts can perform a whole life carbon analysis to calculate the total carbon emissions expected within the entire lifecycle of your development.

Appeal to environmentally conscious customers by minimising the environmental impact of your project.

A whole life carbon assessment helps you understand and mitigate the environmental impact of your development. Assessing the carbon emissions across all stages of your project’s life cycle, helps you reduce cost, risk, and be compliant with building regulations.

What is Whole Life Carbon Assessment?

Whole Life Carbon Assessment (WLCA) is a methodology used to evaluate the total carbon emissions associated with a building throughout its entire life cycle. The assessment takes into account all stages of the life cycle, including raw material extraction, manufacturing, transportation, use, maintenance, and disposal or recycling.

The purpose of a whole life carbon assessment is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the carbon footprint of your project, identifying areas where carbon emissions can be reduced. By considering the entire life cycle, rather than just one stage, WLCA enables more informed and sustainable choices to be made.

WLCA typically involves gathering data on energy consumption, material usage, transportation, and waste generation at each stage of the life cycle. This data is then used to calculate the carbon emissions associated with each activity. The results of the assessment can be used to optimise design and operational decisions to minimise carbon emissions and overall environmental impact.

Methodology, Benchmarking, and Customised Reporting

All our assessments are carried out in line with the guidance set out in the RICS Whole Life Carbon Assessment 2nd Edition methodology and by the UK Green Building Council. This ensures that our calculations and recommendations are not only robust but also in line with recognised industry standards.

We recognise that every project is unique. That’s why we use a range of benchmarks tailored to the nature of your project and your specific motivations. Depending on your requirements, we utilise benchmarks such as:

  • Carbon Heroes Benchmarking
  • LETI Benchmarking Targets
  • GLA WLCA Guidance Benchmarks

Our modelling and reports are tailored to suit your project’s needs. We work closely with your design team to ensure that all required metrics are reported accurately and clearly. Alongside this, we provide guidance on identifying carbon hotspots within your project and recommend cost-effective measures to reduce embodied carbon emissions.

Why do I need a Whole Life Carbon Assessment?

Conducting a Whole Life Carbon Assessment during the initial design stages of your building or development offers significant advantages.

By understanding the full carbon impact early on, you’re empowered to make informed decisions regarding material selection and building procedures. This proactive approach not only mitigates environmental impact but also reduces cost and risk, ensuring compliance with building regulations.
