PSI Value and Part L Compliance

Understanding PSI values and why they matter

What are PSI values?

PSI values (or Ψ-values) measure how much heat passes through the junctions and connections of a building, such as where walls meet floors or roofs. They show the rate of heat loss per metre of junction, measured in watts per metre kelvin (W/mK). This figure is a key part of how a building performs thermally, as it highlights where extra energy may be lost—beyond what’s picked up by U-values for walls, roofs, or glazing.

In the UK, PSI values are required for SAP (Standard Assessment Procedure) calculations in residential projects, and are an important part of energy modelling for non-domestic buildings as well. They help identify thermal bridges, which are areas where heat can escape more easily, leading to higher energy bills, colder spots, and potential condensation or mould.

Why do PSI values matter for Part L?

Part L of the Building Regulations sets mandatory energy efficiency standards for both new and existing buildings. PSI values are central to this because they allow a more accurate assessment of heat loss. This means that designers and contractors can make better choices on construction details, minimising weak spots and ensuring the building is comfortable and efficient for occupants. Early focus on PSI values can prevent costly redesigns, delays, or non-compliance issues at completion.

Dan at enevo has completed for us SBEM Calculations and EPC Certificates for 6 commercial units on an industrial estate. The cost of the works was very competitive and the service we received was second to none. With very limited time to get these works completed Dan worked round the clock (and into his annual leave!!) to ensure that our completion date was achieved with very little notice. Would highly recommend!
