Workplace Noise & Vibration Assessments

Workplace Noise & Vibration Assessment Services

Workplace noise and vibration assessments help employers understand employees’ exposure and identify measures to protect their health. Our service focuses on noise at work and hand-arm vibration from tools and equipment, supporting practical decisions about working methods, exposure controls, information and training.

Noise exposure can damage hearing, while vibration transmitted through the hands and arms can affect nerves and circulation. Understanding the tasks people carry out, the equipment they use and the duration of exposure is essential to assessing these risks.

Through Aegis Services, now part of enevo, we provide assessment support that includes exposure evaluation, reports and action plans, and employee awareness training. The assessment scope is agreed around your activities, equipment and working environment.

When Is a Noise or Vibration Assessment Needed?

Employers must assess risks where work is likely to expose employees to harmful noise or vibration. In Great Britain, the relevant duties are set out in the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 and the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005.

Activities such as breaking concrete, cutting materials, grinding and operating workshop machinery can require attention. The assessment should consider people carrying out the task and others exposed nearby, as well as the actual duration and pattern of exposure.

Reviewing exposure is particularly useful when equipment, processes or working hours change, when existing information is unreliable, or when workers report concerns. An assessment should identify practical action rather than simply record a measurement.

How Our Assessment Support Works

01

Understand Your Activities

We start by identifying the tasks, equipment and people involved, alongside existing assessments, controls and any particular concerns.

02

Gather Representative Exposure Information

The assessment considers operating conditions and how long people are exposed. Noise surveys may use sound level meters or personal dosimeters. Hand-arm vibration assessment uses suitable vibration data and exposure durations, with measurement where needed.

03

Evaluate Employee Exposure

Noise and hand-arm vibration exposures are evaluated separately against the relevant action and limit values, taking account of the work carried out and the information available.

04

Report Findings and Priorities

The report identifies areas requiring attention and sets out an action plan. Recommendations focus on practical ways to prevent or reduce exposure and improve existing arrangements.

05

Support Awareness and Review

Employee awareness training helps explain the risks and the controls required. Assessments should remain relevant as equipment, tasks and working arrangements change.

Noise at Work: Exposure Values and Controls

Noise exposure depends on both sound level and duration. The following values apply to daily personal exposure, or weekly exposure where its use is appropriate under the Regulations. Peak sound pressure is assessed separately.

ValueDaily or weekly exposurePeak sound pressure
Lower exposure action value80 dB(A)135 dB(C)
Upper exposure action value85 dB(A)137 dB(C)
Exposure limit value87 dB(A)140 dB(C)

Hearing protection is not taken into account when comparing exposure with the action values. Its protective effect is taken into account when checking the exposure limit values.

Control should start with eliminating noise risks at source or reducing them as far as reasonably practicable. Options can include quieter equipment, maintenance, enclosure, separation and changes to working methods.

Suitable hearing protection must be available on request at the lower action values and provided and used at or above the upper action values where exposure cannot be reduced below them. It can also be needed while other controls are being introduced. Correct selection, fitting, training and supervision matter.

Aegis Services, now part of enevo

Aegis Services joined enevo in 2026, bringing further construction health and safety, CDM, Clerk of Works and risk management experience into the group.

The Aegis team has supported clients across the North West since 1995, with experience spanning thousands of projects and more than 600 clients. This experience now sits alongside enevo's wider Building Safety, Building Compliance and Building Control capabilities.

This joined-up expertise allows clients to access health and safety support alongside other specialist services where their projects or organisational requirements extend into wider built-environment compliance.

Frequently asked questions?

Is a Hand-Arm Vibration Assessment the Same as Medical HAVS Testing?

No. An exposure assessment examines the tools, tasks and duration of vibration exposure. Clinical assessment considers whether a worker has developed hand-arm vibration syndrome, known as HAVS, or another health condition.

Tingling, numbness, reduced grip or fingers turning white can indicate a problem and should be reported promptly. Medical assessment and diagnosis require appropriate occupational health input; an equipment assessment does not provide a diagnosis.

When Is Health Surveillance Required?

For noise, hearing checks are required for employees likely to be regularly exposed above the upper action values, or who are otherwise at risk.

For hand-arm vibration, health surveillance is required at or above the exposure action value and in other circumstances where there is a risk to health. It should not wait until symptoms appear.

Health surveillance complements exposure controls. The appropriate programme should be arranged with competent occupational health support.

Does Every Assessment Require New Measurements?

Not always. An assessment needs reliable information representative of the work. Existing measurements or suitable equipment data may be sufficient in some circumstances.

Where that information cannot reliably describe exposure, measurements may be needed. The assessor must consider the equipment, operating conditions, uncertainty and actual exposure duration.

Does This Service Include Whole-Body Vibration?

The service described on this page covers workplace noise and hand-arm vibration. Whole-body vibration, such as vibration transmitted through a vehicle seat, requires a separate assessment scope.

If this is relevant to your workplace, tell us when enquiring so the support required can be clarified.

Is This the Same as Environmental Noise Monitoring?

No. These assessments focus on occupational exposure. Planning-related acoustic services and construction noise, dust and vibration monitoring address different requirements, such as effects on surrounding properties and communities.

A site may need both types of assessment, depending on its activities and the people affected.

How Often Should Assessments Be Reviewed?

Review assessments when equipment, processes, exposure durations or other relevant conditions change, or when there is reason to doubt the findings. Worker feedback and health-surveillance results can also indicate a need for review.

For noise, HSE advises checking whether a review is needed at least about every two years even if nothing appears to have changed. This is guidance, not a fixed legal requirement to commission a new survey every two years.

What Information Should We Provide?

Provide the site location, relevant tasks, equipment details, working patterns and the number of people potentially exposed. Existing assessments, operating instructions, exposure records and details of current controls can help establish the appropriate scope.
