Elimination of Dormitory Accommodation at the Elgar Unit

The first phase of a mental health scheme located within the Elgar Unit at Newtown Hospital, Worcestershire is now complete.

The elimination of dormitory accommodation provides the first of two new acute mental health wards to be located within the hospital.

This scheme was originally a refurbishment of two existing acute mental health wards within the Elgar Unit. During the design process, a decision was made to demolish and rebuild the Holt and Athlon wards instead.

What did the project require?

The new wards must comply with current Health Building Note 03-01 for Adult Acute Mental Health Units and Fire Code Fire Safety in the NHS HTM 5-03 Operational Provisions. The build must also comply with the BRE document BREEAM UK 2018 Technical Manual for Non-Domestic Buildings and achieve BREEAM ‘Very Good’ status.

The images identify fire alarm detectors, anti-ligature vandal resistant smart luminaires with daylight sensors, ceiling mounted radiant heating panels, supply and extract ventilation grills and comfort cooling.

The roof void plantroom image shows the mechanical BMS Control panel and associated heating ventilation air condition plant and ductwork. The right side of the plantroom shows all the door access controllers.
