Royal Oldham Hospital RAAC ICU Works
The Royal Oldham Hospital RAAC ICU Works project involves fitting out a newly constructed extension shell at Block 4A and making internal alterations to the existing T5–T6 ward areas.
The scheme will provide new critical care accommodation with associated ancillary and support facilities. Covering approximately 2,308 m², the works take place within an operational hospital, requiring coordination with existing clinical areas and retained building services.
Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust is the end client, with Ridge & Partners LLP identified as Project Safety Delivery Partner.
What did the project require?
The development combines specialist critical care requirements with the practical constraints of working within a live hospital.
Restricted access, multiple stakeholders and the need to maintain existing healthcare services influence design and construction decisions. The new accommodation also needs to integrate with the existing hospital while accounting for adjacent areas supporting patients with critical care needs.
Specialist mechanical and electrical services are a central consideration, including ventilation, environmental controls and critical power systems.
enevo’s involvement
enevo was appointed as Building Regulations Principal Designer, supporting the planning, management and monitoring of Building Regulations compliance throughout the design process.
Our role focused on coordinating regulatory requirements across architectural, structural and specialist building-services design. This included supporting consideration of the interfaces between:
- Ventilation and environmental controls.
- Electrical and critical power systems.
- Fire and life safety.
- Clinical layouts and accessibility.
- Retained hospital services.
- New and existing building fabric.
- Relevant Health Technical Memoranda requirements.
Coordinating design within a live hospital
enevo worked collaboratively with the client and consultant team as the scheme developed, helping identify regulatory matters and areas requiring further design evidence or coordination.
This approach supported consideration of Building Regulations requirements alongside specialist healthcare needs. Design changes needed to be considered across disciplines because of their potential implications for clinical operation, fire safety, access and retained systems.
Project status
The supplied project information records the scheme as ongoing, with completion projected for November 2026 within a planned 12-month programme.
